About Fairer Fields

Fairer Fields accelerates the science and technology needed to make agriculture more humane for all. We're a nonprofit that brings together farmers, industry partners, and researchers to develop practical, evidence-based approaches to agriculture that support productivity, animal welfare, and farmer agency.

Agriculture affects numerous animals every year. We research and promote technologies and practices that improve outcomes for animals and support farmers, and work with producers and agricultural companies to implement better practices.

Focus Areas

We concentrate on the pressing and neglected questions in agricultural management, including:

  1. Smarter pest management. Pesticides protect crops but can also impact large numbers of animals. We research application methods and alternatives that keep fields productive while reducing harms to the animals on them.
  2. Wildlife-friendly harvesting. Harvesting can disrupt ground-nesting birds, small mammals, and other wildlife that share cropland. We develop and promote practical techniques and timing strategies that help producers work around vulnerable species during key seasons.
  3. Farmer agency. Farmers know their land best. We work to ensure farmers have the tools, data, and autonomy to make informed decisions about how their land is managed.
  4. Invertebrate research. Insects and other invertebrates play essential roles in pollination, soil health, and pest control — yet they remain understudied. We support pioneering research into how agricultural practices affect these animals.
